How Viet uses bitcoin to support his sister’s studies in Taiwan

Viet was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and now works in Amsterdam as a brand strategist. His sister studies at the National Tsinghua University in Taiwan and his family still lives in Vietnam.

“My family lives in many different parts of the world. I send bitcoin to help them with their day-to-day expenses and personal savings.”

“I send bitcoin to my sister in Taiwan for her studies”

Viet wanted to send his sister a small allowance each month for her daily expenses. However, he quickly encountered challenges. “I couldn't believe that in this day and age, I still needed to go to a physical location, fill out a bunch of forms, verify both of our identities, and pay transaction fees just to send a small allowance to my sister,” he explained.

Viet heard about Azteco through a Medium articleLink to: https://medium.com/hackernoon/azteco-bitcoin-for-the-masses-fc17f8ca1df0 and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to send a bitcoin voucher to his sister. “I was already sending top-up cards for my sister's phone plan, so sending bitcoin with an Azteco voucher felt intuitive for both of us,” said Viet.

“My mom has started saving with bitcoin”

Ever since his sister began using bitcoin, Viet’s mother has also started to look into saving with bitcoin. “My mom already has a fixed 30 year savings account with a traditional bank in Vietnam, but she is always looking for new ways to diversify her savings,” said Viet. “What she likes about saving in bitcoin is that it’s easy to access if she has unexpected spending or wants to send bitcoin to my sister.”

“Paying with QR codes is a daily thing in Vietnam”

“If you walk on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, it's easy to spot stores that accept bitcoin and people that are paying with QR codes,” explained Viet. “That's why I think the concept of a bitcoin voucher, which combines QR code payment with a top-up card interaction, can resonate with me, my family, and many Vietnamese people.”
